The Warby Ranges Group

Background to the Group

The Warby Ranges Area

The Warby Range Landcare group is unusual in that it falls under two catchment management authorities- the Warby Ranges, east of the hill - Fifteen Mile Creek, Three Mile Creek and Lower Ovens River catchment; then west of Warby Ranges - Mokoan and Upper Boosies Creek catchments.

The Warby Ranges Landcare & Rabbit Action Group

The Warby Range Landcare group formed back in April 1992. Its origin was that of landholders adjoining or in close proximity to the Warby Range State Park. Its emphasis was to address the boundary issues of rabbit problems on the interface of private and public land adjoining the State Park.

A committee then formed in May 1992, with members from the CFA areas, which touched on the park's boundary, plus the park's ranger at that time, Mark Webster.

Group Focus, Aims and Goals The emphasis has broadened beyond rabbit control to weed control; and other vermin, eg, foxes, starlings, etc; revegetation; water quality enhancement; safe use of chemicals and use of alternatives by Landcare and farmers. The Warby Range group has presented free courses on safe use of chemicals. Water quality is a very definitive focus of Landcare.

Group Activities

These include natural rabbit control, weed control, and revegetation corridors for the purpose of water quality and wildlife enhancement. Also research into the impact of pest birds on horticulture, and the impact of kangaroos on agriculture, has been carried out. There have been some erosion management and river and stream bank management projects.

To give a good balance, the group also have social functions and information speakers on the agenda.
